Getting fit, physically and financially
by Karrde on Feb.25, 2010, under Self
The past week has seen some interesting turnaround in my life. Wednesday morning Lisa and I had our first session at the gym we joined this past weekend. Tuesday night was spend really looking at where all our money is.
More about be (Take 2)

So here I am again. Almost exactly 6 months since my last blog post. Not entirely fair to my self, I did start another blog post but got interrupted some time in that time frame. That original post went something like this:
Most days work is work, but today was at least a little interesting.
On the surface I work for a small auto finance company called Coastal Credit LLC. They are owned by a holding company called White River Capital (RVR). RVR doesn’t actually do anything, they are just a small office with two employees that put out or finical statements and are the public company that I hold stock in.
Today they put out a press release announcing a merger with First Chicago Bankcorp. The definition is a reverse merger
The irony of that post just hanging out there is that I no longer work for Coastal. Nowadays I work for an even smaller company named sandSecurity. The greatest thing about it is I get to work from home. The owner of the company is also a long term friend.
The only other major thing in the past 6 months was the passing of my Maternal Grandmother. That involved an emergency trip to Utica, NY. This occurred right after the 4th of July, and took up most of that Emergency Fund I was talking about. But hey that’s why it was there, if it had not it would have been that much more on credit cards. Since then I’ve rebuilt that fund back up, and also managed to knock off a few credit cards.
I’ll be adding a new blog to the links today. An old friend started up his own blog, with a little more direction than just random life. I guess you could say that that has shamed me into coming back here, and it was probably the straw. I’ve been thinking about it more lately. I’ve been active on facebook for a while, and status messages there morphing to making sure my twitter was updated, coming back here was just the natural extension.
Off to MarsCon

Well, it’s that time of year again. The bags are mostly packed, the weekend is clear, and we’re headed to Williamsburg for the weekend. I’ve attended most of the MarsCons since about 1992, and Lisa started joining me in about 1997. This has transition from a gaming convention for us into more of a social gathering, seeing people we only see once or twice a year. It’s a relaxing weekend, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
Am I a kid again?
by Karrde on Sep.30, 2007, under Self
As we grow into adults, we stop doing “kid” things. But I truly wonder just what defines something as a “kid” thing. As a teenager I participated in many activities that I no longer do now, but why did I stop.
I used to bowl a lot. I had my own ball, joined a league or two over the years, and I enjoyed it. I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I was bowling. I’m pretty sure I’ve been as an “adult”, but I can’t remember.
But I really want to talk about Roller Skating. How many Friday and Saturday nights as a teen were spent at the Roller Rink. How many parties were had in one of those back rooms, where you really didn’t care about the party, you just wanted to get out and skate. So when was the last time you were on a pair of skates?
Adult Roller Blading is popular enough, I see them all the time when Lisa and I are walking down the boardwalk. But when was the last time you put on a pair of rented skates, and wheeled around the rink for an hour or so. Now it may sound dumb, but there’s a lot of benefits to it. Lisa and I decided to do so last night, and I had fun. Lisa was a little hesitant out there, and took some spills, but then it’s been a lot longer for her than it was for me. For me though it was the proverbial bicycle, after a few minutes I was back into the groove.
So we’re cruising around the rink and what do I see? More appropriately what don’t I see? Other adults. We kinda figured that going in, and it wasn’t completely barren. There was one other couple put there, but they had a handful of small children with them. And in the end I’m not sure why not. Like I said, I had fun. There’s something about the care freeness of just spinning around the rink. Another thing is that it’s a great workout. Lisa said that the time we spent there earned her 10 Activity Points, and I’ll say that I didn’t see too many fat kids out on the rink. Now there’s probably some Catch-22 in that statement, but I’ll take getting fit where I can.
Lisa and I plan on doing it again. It was a fun activity, and doesn’t cost that much. For about the same price as a movie ticket, we got admission and skate rental. For that price we could have skated for up to 4 hours, instead of watching a 2 hour movie. There’s no popcorn involved, and we’re doing something instead of sitting in a seat the whole time.
So how serious are we about this? We were actually looking at buying our own skates this afternoon
Easter Travels and such…
by Karrde on Apr.11, 2007, under Self
So, I’m all rested up after a nice trip up to Philadelphia for Easter and other things. I think I need a vacation.
Besides Easter, I was up there for a few specific reasons. Firstly, I hadn’t been there since Christmas 2005. Second, since my Dad is moving to a retirement community and selling the house, I needed to clean out any of the stuff I still had kicking around the house. Spring Cleaning 250 miles from home… Woo Hoo! Last, but definitely not least, is was my Grandmothers 90th Birthday. It still takes some time for that to sit in now and then. She’s not a fluke either. That side of the family has had many members surviving to their late 80s and 90s. So I have something to look forward to
.
So, before the trip I took a quick stop at my local BestBuy and picked myself up a GPS. I’ve wanted one for a while. Between going on the trip, and it being on sale for $100 off. It seemed like a good time to acquire one. This will allow me to partake in the wonderful world of GeoCaching. Something that I’ve been wanting to try for a while. Look for future blogs, as I record my “travels”.
